I shouldn't be as upset as I am that there's a women's Marni sale on gilt but no men's Marni

There's a whole bitter thread on Monocle right now in one of the subforums, but they do indeed do a very good job of selling a consumer-oriented magazine as a signal of class and intelligence. (Vs. a glossier, artier mag that doesn't pretend to have much content other than editorial photo spreads)

Well Monocle is basically an how-to guide on what to say, do and buy to be an international hype participant.

what monocle make you think their reader is like: 30 y/o independant graphic designer from Portland w. Japanese girlfriend who vacations in Yemen and travels all over Europe to modernize the fonts of fashion brands logos. Likes niche products and cleans up nice but wears urban lumberjack wear. Used to have a sneaker collection without being geeky. Blogs about well-designed home appliances. Goes out to the coolest clubs when he travels.

what monocle readers are like: 30 y/o lawyer who wish he could dress as a lumberjack for work (does it on the weekend when not in the office working on a brief for big oil), buys a lot of furniture and items suggested by the mag and splurges huge amounts of money on the two weeks of vacation he has during the year, going to Monocle approved destinations (and hotels) doing Monocle-approved things. Fondly remembers the post-graduation summer he backpacked all over Europe and wish he had the time to get a Scandinavian girlfriend, votes democrat but doesn't have black friends (very concerned about Africa though). Masturbates to "classy" pornography.Goes out to clubs with bottle service where you have to dress up, wishes he could get into real hype clubs.

Is that the margiela blazer?

I saw that too, shoulders are very Margiela but to the best of my knowledge they never did this type of collar. Probably Balmain or something like that...

Make no mistake, the second guy might actually be more interesting than the first but he clearly aspires to be the first while having the huge purchasing power to compensate that loss by buying stuff Monocle pushes.

Well you've got me pinned on at least a couple of those generalizations and believe me I feel adequately lame as a result, but I don't mean to bring up the marketing of Monocle specifically as much as the reaction against the PUT EVERYTHING ONLINE thing print went through a couple of years ago. It seems one solution to the problem of how to market your print content as "special" is not to put it online at all. Obv this doesn't work for breaking news but it certainly does for cultural coverage.

the jacket is Balmain or Balenciaga, I've seen it in person.

as for Monocle I'd never buy anything they sell and some sections of the magazine are lacking but I really enjoy reading the global affairs articles.
