"it's you're not your" is one the best come-backs, period.

Why does everyone hate on durian? It smells good and it tastes decent, it's much better than something disgusting like a banana.

Really now? 2. \ta weak or sham argument set up to be easily refuted [syn: straw man] "the author attacks an argument different from (and weaker than) the opposition's best argument." {Stephen Downes Guide to the Logical Fallacies} Wouldn't you say bringing up spelling is a way of "setting up an argument that is easy to refute" In order to attack a different (weaker) argument of the opposition's best argument (in this case, his spelling)? It's going beside the point in order to win an argument, which is the key principle of 'straw man' arguments. Yes it's not your typical example, but I can't see how you can call it 'Wrong', feel free to 'correct' me if you feel it necessary, though that would be highly ironic.

Actually, no. Poor spelling and grammar is not an "argument" in itself that is being constructed only to be torn down, as is the case in a straw man. If you're going to play the logical fallacy game, what is really going on here is much closer to poisoning the well.

I don't really care to carry on this conversation, though. Back to my paper~

That's a better way of putting it. Fair point that spelling and grammar isn't in itself an argument, but I guess you could say that there is an implied argument of "the person is an idiot because he can't spell" which is constructed by the person retorting. Though I admit it is a stretch in this regard and I think 'poisoning the well' fits infinitely better. My point's the same though, that it is deviating from the argument in order to win the argument. Good luck with your paper

You've been in Asia too long if you think durian is good. It may just be the foulest commonly available food on this planet.

I've never actually had durian but it looks like poop and I got durian flavored bubble tea one time when I felt adventurous. It tasted like.. gasoline?
