Been to Knob Creek three times, actually. Fun, nice to see stuff you'll never be able to afford (or even own, especially Posties like G18s), nice to pick up parts and accessories you can't otherwise find, nice to run into CIII people you know but rarely meet otherwise. Not nice to be covered in dirt from the line (if KY is in a drought, as it was once) or be able to hear (bring muffs and plugs, really), or have to deal with some seriously obnoxious people (there are a few there). But overall, if you haven't gone, you've got to go. The twin-mount MG42s are incredible, as is Dillon's minigun, and the Quad-50s. And especially neat are the rotating selection of DDs that show up! ~ H

Best .45 I have owned, bar none!

Originally designed for the 10mm round, the P90 series were massively over-engineered and absolutely bulletproof!

Mine is an earlier rail-less version, but the addition of some walnut grips went a long way to prettying her up (I think I posted pics in this thread a few months ago). The safety/decocker on your newer model also looks a little different.

Anyway, congrats - it's a great handgun (though not great for concealed carry)!

Got my M&P 15-22 MOE from Houston Armory yesterday. Nice little gun that my kids will enjoy for sure. Got to get the paperwork done cos this and P22 will like the little cans to keep them quiet....

Shot a bunch of suppressed handguns in a little room with no ear protection....amazingly quiet.
Man, I am just getting done shotgun shopping after 30 years...and now a whole new world to explore....

Not an actual picture of her but it shoots well and I like it at the range.

Be sure to keep the eye pro going. You're going to get a lot of smoke in your face. Also, you're going to have to clean the F***ers every other mag.

For those Class III enthusiasts near south-central PA, the Small Arms Review East gunshow is next weekend in York, PA. I'm going to go on Saturday to drool.

Very nice!

Maybe when my boy works his way up from the Sheridan air rifle to the .22 K98 I have for him, hell graduate to something like that!

Been shooting/collecting French Mas 49/56s for years. Fun semi-auto rifle. Don't let the word "French" think the gun is worthless. It was carried for the Foreign Legion for years.

Any comments regarding the S&W 617, specifically as a first handgun? I've never owned a firearm but have considered purchasing one off and on for the past few years. Obviously this is not for self defense. I am drawn to the simplicity of a revolver and the cheapness of .22 ammo. Went to a gun show once and handled a bunch of semi-auto pistols and never really found anything that felt right in my hand.

Downsides (other than the price of the gun itself)?

Downside (I suppose, depending on how you look at it) would be that it is double-action. While a double-action revolver is very easy to use (point and shoot), it doesn't necessarily make for the best platform to learn on because of the long, heavy pull. Granted, S&W does a pretty good job with the triggers from the factory, and usually they're pretty smooth, but it still won't be as easy to master as a single-action pistol, like say, a Ruger MKIII.

My understanding was that it could be fired either SA or DA. Is that incorrect?

No, that's correct - cock the hammer and you've got a single action.

The 617 is very large and heavy for what it is - and doesn't particularly feel like a 'real gun' (ie centerfire revolver) because there's very little felt recoil. Sights are okay, stock trigger pull in DA will be heavy but should lighten up a little over time.
If you've got the cash, I'd look at the Model 17 Classic - reissue of the older K-22 revolver, essentially the same as the 617 but lighter and blued. Looks cooler, lighter weight.

In terms semi-auto .22s, I'd look for a Ruger 22/45 RP (specifically the RP - means the grip panels on the side are interchangeable rather than molded into the plastic). Nice mid-weight, good triggers, reliable, feels relatively similar to a 1911 (though thinner). I like mine enough I'm going to sell my Browning Buckmark and a Ruger MkII .22.

I may be in the minority, but I really like the looks of the 4" 617. I also suspect I'd like the grips a lot better, but I'll have to handle both.

That said, something like that 22/45 RP you mentioned probably makes more sense - looks like I can get one for ~$300 vs. ~$800 for the S&W. Do those prices sound about right?

$300 sounds right for the Ruger, but I'd expect the 617 to run more like $600.
