How reliable are porsches in terms of owning for long term? I am thinking maybe I can get a used one and just finance it....their old models don't look different from the newer editions..

Reliability is generally good, but there are a few 996 models in the early years that are prone to issues, including engine failures. I recommend that you spend time on http://forums.rennlist.com/ . Lots of very helpful information about the car and what to look for when purchasing one used. It's a great car that'll provide lots of excitement.

I was in this same situation earlier this year. These are the cars i looked at and drove, i must say i pretty much looked at every mid to high end SUV all the way from the Acura MDX to the MB G500.

1. Range Rover Sport- nice, but for 50k ish you get an 06, around 40k miles and as my friends know when the warranties gone it can get pretty pricey.

2. Bmw X6- Loved the looks of it, looked at the X5 didnt give it a second glance after seeing the X6, I like cars that are a little bit different. The X6, seemed more design then function, has little to no visibility, and the trunk was akward.

3. MB Ml series- Liked them, a little bit to many in the area i live though for me to want to buy one.

4. Acura MdX- suprisingly nice, but was a little bit under powered for my taste, honestly didnt know if i wanted an Acura.

5. Porsche Cayenne- Really nice It was either this or the car i ended up with, i liked it but, i also had to look at it in a for the money stance, just didnt quite make the mark.

6. Infiniti FX- The car I ended up buying, suprisingly very quick, good handling for an SUV, and for around 46k got a brand new 09 with everything form Nav, to ventilated seats. I also like the fact that whenever i leave my house i only see like maybe 2 or 3 in town.

No they don't.

You guys must not be from the area. Performance and NYC don't mix. 99% of the time you'll be in bumper to bumper traffic or fighting for position with taxis. The pot holes are horrendous and there are entire avenues in rough cobblestone. If you get anything with a suspension, expect to lose your fillings in a week. I brought my s2000 into NYC and I felt like Jodie Foster going into space in Contact. A Porsche Cayman would be terrible.

Don't get anything in stick unless you like to sit on the clutch all the time. Also expect people to rub your bumpers while parking. Take a look at the bumper of any NY car.

If you don't know much about cars, then swapping snow tires probably isn't your idea of fun. Get a 4 wheel or front wheel drive car.

I'd suggest something with very soft suspension and small for street parking. If you want to look cool, a BMW 335 or Merc C500 should do the job, but don't except to use the engine except to catch up to the guy 5 feet in front of you. Porsche Cayenne wouldn't be bad, but once again engine is useless. Honestly, the best NY car is an automatic Mini or Civic.

Re-drove the Q5 yesterday. Got a different salesman, as last one was off putting. This little SUV is hands down the best vehicle in its class and thousands less than a similarly equipped ML (which is not being placed against the Q5, the GLK is (and that car sucks ass) ), has just fantastic electronics and technology, handling, more than enough power, and an easy wheelbase to deal with in NYC. Q5 is sick. Got a Q7 becuase we needed the space, it was my wife's fav over a few others, I was not totally sold on it but I actually now love it.

There's something about the back of the Q5 that doesn't sit right with me. The Q7 looks a lot better from behind.

I was wondering if you'd made a selection. Good choice, IMO. My best buddy has one, and loves it. I've driven it a time or two and ridden in it lots of times. It's a great vehicle. Enjoy!

hah, I spent 4 years in upstate NY and 2 in Columbus, Ohio.....all with RWD cars.


Columbus Ohio is flat and it never much... we got a foot last year and the entire city freaked out and it was the most snow they had gotten in 40 years. RWD in NE Ohio would be a different story.
