This is all total nonsense. Delicious juicy lamb shawarma with hummus, tahini sauce, fresh parsley and pickled turnip in a fluffy pita >> disgusting $4/lb fake processed meat gyro sogging with liguid yogurt any day any place.

Nope, no iPhone here... just my old Canon point and shoot without the flash on the "Macro mode."

Have you ever had a real gyro? Like one w/ the forcemeat made and pressed in house? I'm not a fan of the greasebuckets either, but when done right it is a revelation. I mean anytime you compare something "delicious and juicy" to something "fake and processed" obviously the delicious and juicy is going to win.

I had doner, gyros and shawarmas in a lot of places, indigenous to the product or not. If by "real gyro" you mean a gyro in Greece or made by Greeks in Europe, the answer is yes twice. I will always prefer the stacked lamb vs. the processed gyro meat, everything else being equal of course. You can have a poorly seasoned, poorly made shawarma that will suck. But, generally speaking, I much prefer the cuts of stacked meat and also much prefer the stuff that goes into a middle-eastern shawarma (hummus and pickled stuff) rather than the stuff that goes into gyros. But that's a personal preference - my main point is really about the meat.

I don't think I typed that as clearly as I had planned.

Can't argue with that. I guess it's personal preference and comfort for me. Where I grew up, I had never even heard of a shawarma, IIRC. So it was gyros whenever I wanted that style of food. When I moved west, I just got pissed that I could never even find a gyro stand or store anywhere. Although I guess I'm not judging shawarma too fairly either, because every one of the several that I've had has been bad and very poorly made.

This is my issue with Schwarma - I HATE pickled beets and turnips. Now..... a nice Kefte Kabob sandwich w/ babba ganoush... that's more like it.

There's nothing to say. But you can ask for your shawarma without pickles, you know...

YES!! Thank you for saying that. Who cares about the toppings. It's all about the meat and I can't believe this nonsense about gyro > shawarma.
