Sounds great... I would assume Din Tai Fung is significantly less expensive and more casual than those places... but you are in great hands. The Din Tai Fung in CA is so great... I can only assume it's even better in HK

I had them at Lao Beijing on Saturday. THey are passable (good size, tend not to fall apart) but if DTF is an 8 and Joe's Shanghai is a 7, anything in Chicago is a 4 at best.

Here are the places I know that make them in order of how good:

Phoenix (used to have a dumpling house.. they were awesome. They still make them upstairs on weekends. Haven't had them since the dumpling house, so I can't vouch)

Ed's Potsticker House (31st and Halstead)

Lao Beijing / Lao Shanghai

Moon Palace

... I'm also not sure if Katy's Dumpling does them. That place does everything very very well, so if they make Xiao Long Bao, I'm sure they're good.

Another food coma weekend.

Friends and I were going to the Saturday night SF Giants game, so we spent the day in the city eating and drinking.

Roli Roti line was too long for me, so I went to KDub's favorite place, Gott's (formerley Taylor's Automatic) in the Ferry Building and had the cheeseburger with yam fries:

"Brunch" dessert brought me up to the Mission to get cookies from Anthony's (Cookies and cream, peanut butter, german chocolate, and semi-sweet):

With the mandatory stop at Slocombe to see what daily offering they had. These are scoops of the cherry blossom and black sesame.

Then met my friend with the game tickets at Dosa where we shared this giant "paper Masala dosa":

We were supposed to meet another friend at Rosamunde Sausages, but he was late and told us to meet him at Monk's Kettle instead. While waiting, we had sausages and beer:

My Russian River Aud Blonde with beer sausage, saurkraut, and grilled onions:

When done with those, we made our way over to Monk's Kettle, and I had the cheese plate with Grevenbroecker and Humboldt Fog:

And lots of beer.

Then we started off to BART to get to the game, but not before getting some drunk food at Truly Mediterranean:

Got me a lamb shawerma:

Why do all you damn SF'ers eat Schwarma? It's impossible to find gyros around here b/c it's all falafel or schwarmas. Thanks for aiding in that perpetuity, Roikins.

BTW, what happened to Taylor's? Did it shut down b/c it sucked?

Do they? I only got it since it's on that damn 7x7 list; it maybe the first one I've had in years. I always got gyros when I was a kid at the now defunct Fashion Island Mall, but that's because I'm a Peninsula brat.
laugh.gif
A guy I used to work with told me to get a falafel from some place in the Mission that had fries in it though, so you can try that.

Nah, there's apparently a "Taylor" family that was going to sue, so they changed it to the surname of the real owners, "Gott." Perhaps the suckiness is why they didn't use their real name in the first place and why the Taylor family was pissed? "Oh, do you guys own that crappy place KDub's hates?"

Ehh, you can keep your shawarmas. I'm moving back East. PM for more info.

WTF??? Lol that's really weird.
And FWIW, I liked the burger I got there. I just hated the fries, and thought that they wayyyy overcharged for only decent food.

Oh, they definitely charge a lot, but I think it's because they put their places up in touristy locations.

I'm going to only eat shawarmas from now on to spite you.

I remember Fashion Island from growing up on the Peninsula. I think I made out with a girl for the first time after skating on that rink. Still, I hate shawermas, at least when compared to gyros, and I hate Taylors, or Gotts, or whatever. I don't like Ti Couz either. Is Bob's good? I think it is a few blocks from me.

Hahaha, EVERYONE made out with a girl at that rink, or the movie theater, but only after playing some video games at the Gold Mine.

There's nothing like a really good gyro.
ffffuuuu.gif
Now you people have me craving gyros. Ti Couz is trash, and I am glad that will be my only visit there.

Bob's is not bad, but it's not awesome. It's worth a stop if you're walking by and they're making the donuts fresh; we got there when they were making fresh donuts, so several of the ones we tried were still warm and crisp. I've been there before when the donuts aren't so fresh, and they're pretty horrid. I think part of the enjoyment is sitting by the door/standing outside and watching who goes into Good Vibrations across the street.

I was going to ask here about Schwarma. I thought it was going to be like a gyro. There is a place down the street that serves Schwarma, if i try it I'll try it for lunch.

Went across the street to the Irish pub and had a really good Ruben with a black & tan

Roikins, what are you using to take the pictures? I assume iPhone, but I'm hoping I'm surprised.

Either way, they make food look pretty good.

It is similar to gyros, but not quite the same. In my experience, which I will say is my own and noone else's, so noone else can come in here and call me a dumbass, but gyros in America are typically a mixture of ground beef and lamb, served with a cucumber/yogurt sauce. Shawarma are the same BASIC sandwich (pita, meat roasted on a spit) but don't have the yogurt sauce and have tabbouleh, and if not tabbouleh, then fresh herbs.

Shawarma are basically crappy gyros in a tougher, more cracker like, shell. The height of suckiness, and a very San Franciscan thing, is the chicken shawarma.
