Wearing white trousers - white socks?

Am I allowed to wear white socks with white trousers? Or should I go for a light grey sock? I know that white socks are msotly verboten outside of sportswear but this is the only occasion I can see the 'rule' being supplanted.

Ideas?

Its a good question, I would be interested in hearing peoples thoughts.
I have worn white trousers in the past, but I am pretty sure I did not wear white socks. I don't own any white socks in fact, so pretty damn sure, but I don't know what I did wear.

Socks that reference something else you are wearing? or maybe stripes/bright colours?


Of course if you are wearing them with your new loafers, go sock-less.

Go with coloured socks - blue, red, yellow etc.

White trousers are really nice. Well, off white. I don't think I will ever get dead white. But never say never. Except that I can say that I absolutely never will get a white knit tie. Good God.

The only white trousers I've ever worn have been linen, and I'd never wear them with white socks. Patterned or "fun" socks, not white.

You have rules, and spirit of the rules.

Rules say : no white socks. Spirit of the rules explains why : because you must not draw the viewer's attention to your feet, which are ungraceful and lifeless. The viewer's eye must focus on your face, not on your socks.

While wearing white pants, the best way of drawing attention to your feet consists in wearing "fun" and "colored" socks. Actually, the sock can be understood as an extension to your pants (your foot being an extension of your leg), hence the easiest way to please is to match pants and socks. So, it looks always kosher to wear white socks with white pants, because no one will notice, and that's the point. You should also wear white underpants, for that very same reason.

The main problem, now, is to choose the right shoes.

In my own rule book, white trousers = no socks at all.

White trousers = navy and white stripe socks. Rockin' the nautical look!
