New Indy Car Design

Delta Wing racing has apparently unveiled a new design for Indy Cars. Versus had a shot of it and it looks amazing. Can still get above 200 MPH, uses half as much fuel, an engine half the current size...and it looks freakin amazing.



One of several new chassis designs they are considering.

Looks like something he'd like ^. I am not a fan.

Not a fran.

CART/IRL/Indy Car/whatever they are calling themselves should open up the engine formula to aggressively advocate alternative fuels and stock-block engines. Maybe then more people would care about their sport.

Batmobile?

I like it. It's about time they shook up the formula, and let really new ideas in instead of keeping people in the same tired mold.

I'll see if they can dig up some of the other designs,which were all essentially the current car with some slight modifications. There was one though that had a system of lights and some other stuff that would show the car's position and some other BS. It just looked too confusing and like it was trying to do too much.

This is the only proposed one that is past design stage.

Looks cheesy.

I like it for many reasons:

1. It looks very different. If they could open up the rules book so that everyone didn't build the same-looking car (think Can-Am or production sports car racing like ALMS where there's lots of variety), that would really boost fan interest.

2. It uses aero for something other than adding downforce in a way that tries to skirt around some rules the governing body thought would reduce downforce --- F1 is the poster child for the aero cat-and-mouse game. Delta's is actually efficient, and allows for overtaking.

3. The body shape does not dictate engine technology, so different builders can still use whatever engine technology they want. In fact they specifiy that the only engine constraint should be a fuel flow control --- there's your relevance to street cars right there.

It's going to take a lot more than the Batmobile to save the IRL.

i'm just an automotive engineer, but I'm pretty sure you're going to want more wheel track for better steering....
