What are you drinking right now?

I almost never drink Scotch any more, and when I do it's always JW Black. I just don't have any interest in the malts. I did once, but very mild interest that soon passed.

Malts are an interest/obsession for sure. Like with all interests in my life, they will come...then go.

Coal Ila tastes much more like a fireplace in my opinion. Its more ashy, whereas Laphroaig is medicinal (Gold Bond? I kid, I kid.).

The friend who suggested this is a professor emeritis of Harvard and twenty years my senior. When he mentions things of this nature -- which fortunateoly isn't too often -- I typically defer to his age & academic status ... and just accept without questioning. I assume you are talking about the standard OB 12. If so, its not as complex as the Laga. It is less sweet, has more citrus and more smoke (but less peat).
