Any idea how to get a "midnight black" (like I've seen on an Edward Green) tone on a pair of black shoes?

The definitive answer on these type of questions is Fr. Ted. You'll need to go to a shop that sells priests' clothes:
Ted: That's right, Dougal. You see, ordinary shops sell what look like black socks, but if you look closely, you'll see that they're very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue. Dougal:: That's true. I thought my uncle Tommy was wearing black socks, but when I looked at them closely, they were just very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very, very dark blue. Ted:: Never buy black socks from a normal shop. (whispers) They shaft you every time! (Dougal looks worried

You're in CAN, so just pick one... it doesn't matter

Historically Canadians have followed the UK rules. Some went more continetal. US for various reasons just wasn't on the menu for anybody.

Canada being Canada you can do what you want. If you're going to dinner with somebody from the family compact then it might be an issue but most people these days are impressed with a clean hockey jersey.

Does Alden paste wax contain any silicone? Harmful solvent? I know Saphir polish does not. What are some other polish that has no silicone in it?

Would it be weird to bring pictures to a tailors shop of what I want made or how I want it to fit?

Perfectly fine. My tailor actually likes that since it's easier for him to understand what I want.

Would a Cognac shoe work with a Dark Blue(not quite navy), or charcoal suit for office purposes?

How about for a wedding?

I have the opportunity to get some AE Soho's at a good price, I'm just torn between black, and cognac. Those are the only two I can get at a discounted rate.

I wouldn't wear the Sohos to a wedding. They are a fine business shoe and are a great price now that they are being discontinued.
Do you already own a pair of black shoes? If so get them in cognac.

I own a pair of black loafers already, which is what I generally wear to the office, and what I'll probably wear to the wedding next week. I don't own any black lace ups.

So, Cognac is fine with dark suits?

Yes.

Like the Italians say, black shoes with dark pants if for busboys.
