Cadet jacket or fatigue jacket... which one to go with? I'd be wearing it with an untucked button-down or t-shirt, so I'm slightly wary of the length of the cadet jacket. Then again, I'm 5'7" so I think it might work out in the end.

Two different animals, but sounds like you'd be happier with the fatigue jacket. I think it's more versatile, anyway. I wear mine with everything from sloppy jeans and t-shirt to khakis and button-down tucked in shirts.

Is there any sort of rough timetable, or general idea to tell when there will be a 20% off promotion? I have a few items I am thinking about picking up, but would like to wait for the discount.

no but for the past few months, they've had one at least every other week. There was one this past weekend so I'm assuming one this coming week. If there was a major snow storm, I would guarantee an extra percentage off the sale items. But they some times take out items so I would get any item you really want, just to be safe.

Thanks! Does the fatigue jacket run true to size or about a size large (which has been my experience with most J.Crew items)? I believe a previous poster mentioned he was 5'7" and ~160lb, which is about where I am, and he stated that he was a small in J.Crew... I presume I'm the same?

...walked into Jcrew looking for the red chambray(didn't have in store), walked out with the nailhead shirt which looks waaayyy better in person than online. I was shocked that it's as thick as the Iron Heart hickory stripe shirt and that it's triple seamed. It's really surprising to see those kind of details outside of the specialty designers.

Cotton suits make me a bit nervous in the sense that they wrinkle a lot and trap heat. However, the McNutt linen suitings are a neat alternative (I know linen wrinkles, but the McNutt variety doesn't seem to that much).

Thoughts?

The urban slimfit ones look great - dusty basltic is a interesting color

gumercindo - My friend has the linen one and says it wrinkles way too much - I'm pretty much bought on the cotton chino ludlow myself

I only own 2 suits as of now one from h&m and one D&G both in 38R. I like a slim-cut suit but the h&m pants are VERY slim with a real low rise. I am 5'11" 165lbs
I have jcrew urban slim stanton pants in 31 waist and they fit well.
how is the fit on the ludlow suit? I figured i should just go with a 38R jacket and 31W pants
the fit in the picture online looks great but I know that can be quite deceiving. Is it pretty slim IRL?

any better recommendations for a slim cotton suit?

The Ludlow suits aren't going to be as fitted in the chest and waist as an H&M. I can wear an H&M 40 off the rack with perfect fit but a Ludow 40 I'll still take to get tailored in the waist. The armholes and chest not much you can do. I've purchased tops before from H&M but never bottoms because like you I can't stand the extremely low rises. I want to say some of the JCrew Ludlow blazers that only come in casual sizes (S,M,L) are actually trimmer than the blazers and suits that are sized. That was just my impression from trying on the striped cotton and corded cotton blazers.

Re: utility jackets and speaking of H&M, I was having lunch at the mall (Crystal Court, SCP) and popped by H&M just to take a look. Their utility jacket caught my eye. It's a real nice trim fit, 100% cotton and really nice weight for soCal. $49.50. Comes in khaki, olive, and faded blue (hmm... sound familiar?)

They also have a another military-style jacket with metal buttons and epaulets (hmm... sound familiar).

i'm gonna second this glowing recommendation, the ludlow is one of my favorite fits. i got the wool flannel charcoal suit. it fits similar to a us-made hickey suit i have (much slimmer than something from the regular hickey freeman line), and cost a lot less.

Thanks for this tip. There's a new H+M right near me at the old Fox Hills mall in Culver City. Hopefully they have the utility jacket there, in my size, since I don't like my chances too much of finding a medium in the J. Crew one right now, and it's half price. Hopefully it looks as nice as well.
