I think it depends on the pocket square. Something baroque won't work, but do you think plain white linen would be wrong?

No, not wrong. It's just that even most correctly combined pocket squares detract from the look more than they add to it. It may be a nice, well-coordinated PS, but it also signals that someone is really trying quite hard, so suddenly a lot of a look's effortlessness is lost. Wearing a PS is a declaration of intent, it immediately ups the game by several notches. And not many people can play at that level.
