Someone please find me a picture of 3" cuffs. I have a really hard time imagining that. Or I guess, imagining that someone would really do that.

Many of Duke Ellington's trousers were tailored with four-inch cuffs - he was 6'1", I think... Can't find a picture, you're just going to have to trust me on this one. Â

EDIT: Ah HA.

And so, in conclusion, if you aren't a late, world-renowned jazz composer, pianist and big-band leader, think twice.

Bravo. The Duke, along with Miles, Chet, et al. had a certain style.

That type of exaggerated cuff is much more popular with women's pants.

I solved this by buying a 2 pant suit. Got one plain front cuffed and one plain though I'm disappointed that I only got a 1.5 inch cuff. I think 1 5/8 is what I was looking for.

Indeed. The polarization into "no cuffs on flat fronts ever" and "massive cuffs only" is quite striking.

For the record, there is no relationship between cuffs and pleats, except that both are awesome. The only rule on the subject is that formal trousers are never cuffed. The only guideline is that cuffs should be proportional to height.

Anyone who says otherwise is full of it.

I'm 6' and I go with 2" cuffs on everything - flat or pleated, but about the only pleated pants I have are with some of my suits.

I was really thrown off by the first few replies until I noticed the date.

I think Get Smart sometimes gets 2.5-3" cuffs (or 'turn-ups').

Wait, so when you look at the bottom of trousers, you also look at the top? And horizontal lines at the bottom are only compatible with vertical lines at the top?

I believe there are a lot of SF'ers who have turn-ups on a lot of their flat-front trousers. This is common and very preferable these days. I personally would put turn-ups (or cuffs) on my flat-front trousers as it is stylish and it separates you, as a man, from the boys. The general idea of cuffs on trousers is to give the trousers a little bit of weight in order for the trousers to hang straight. Perviously, it was assumed that cuffs must only be put on pleated trousers, but that rule has been somewhat abolished.

If you're going to cuff your trousers make sure it is no more than 2 inches (5 centimeters). (1.6 inches or 4 centimeters is also acceptable.) 3 inches is too extreme and would look like you're trying too hard to seek attention.

To illustrate here is a video of GQ rules about cuffs on trousers...
