This thread needed to be done. I love the G1 series as well as all the mythology and story lines that sprouted from it, but I hate the mindless Michael Bay iteration. Everything that came between was just odd--WTF is "Beast Wars"? However, I think that has to do with the fact that I grew up watching G1 and stopped watching cartoons before the later stuff came out. Also, the later stuff was all Japanese-produced, in anime style, which is a completely different style of storytelling--personally, I don' t like it in the Transformers context. But now I'm really excited about two things: (1) Transformers Animated, and (2) Transformers: War for Cybertron, the new video game coming out in May. If you're a G1 fan, I think you'll find both very appealing. Unfortunately, I didn't discover Transformers Animated until recently, after the show finished three seasons and was cancelled. But from what I've seen, it's very much in the spirit of G1, although the artistic style is completely different (less realistic, more Saturday morning cartoon). You'll recognize most of the characters, although they have somewhat different backgrounds and the overall story is modified quite a bit. Consider it a sort of alternate reality to G1. There are lots of inside references that only G1 nuts will pick up on. The main thing going for it is that the Transformers have become real characters again, with real personalities. RJman--you will not be disappointed by Starscream. War for Cybertron is a third person shooter (over the shoulder) that takes place on Cybertron, before the Transformers stumble onto Earth. It's largely G1-based, but not strictly. Apparently, Hasbro has said that the game counts as dogma--sort of like a reboot for the whole series. It's being done by a bunch of Transformers geeks who's main intention is to draw the franchise back toward G1 and away from Michael Bay's mutilations. I have no idea whether it will be a good game, but it is the first time a video game has played center stage in developing Transformers rather than backed up cartoon or movie. The trailer: Anyway, just wanted to see if there are any fellow nerds out there who love this stuff. Definitely watch that trailer. Transformers Animated episodes are all on YouTube, too. Optimus Prime, in his War for Cybertron iteration:

I had some of the toys as a child, usually second hand ones that were missing all the little gadgets and weapons and things. I always really wanted one of Soundwave with the little cassette tapes that transformed into his minions.

I tapped out after the first cartoon movie because about that time I discovered pornography.

Dude, watch the War for Cybertron trailer and tell me that doesn't make you feel like you're five all over again. Oh, and they got Peter Cullen to do Prime's voice.

TF were not out when I was five.

I bet you were one of those kids who kept them all in their packaging with the styrofoam and support materials.

Nah, I played with all mine. My brother was much older and did all the buying and collecting. If there was a figure he thought was worth preserving, he'd buy two and let me open one. I think I went through three Optimus Primes--each would be worth like $5k today, if they were MISB.

I had pretty much all of the G1 figures, up until the funky lines like the Headmasters and Targetmasters. In fact, we kept all the boxes, which are worth a fortune by themselves, but my dad mistakenly tossed them out in a house cleaning a few years ago. Thousands down the drain.

I can't believe grown ass men still collect this stuff. I mean, I'm a nerd and all, but collecting transformers is ultra-nerdy.

I bet you're just bitter that you never got your favorite one.

I think I'm going to change it to 'Transform in the City'. Clothes are getting boring.
