Thanks to my friend Wes Bourne from SF (who volunteered to help me translate to French) the metal toe pieces finally arrived. I promised to post when they came in.

Here is what they look like:

This picture shows my own concept of maximum protection for longest wear.
JR heel, Vibram sole guard and, metal toe pieces applied with brass screws.

I always wear down my toes first, so I'm excited to see you have these. I'm not a big fan of topys, though. Is it possible for you to recess the toe plate into a leather sole, or is the topy needed to make the sole of the shoe flush with the metal toe plate?

Nick, I hear Aportnoy has a few new pairs of shoes for which he needs some taps. Better start on that 2nd order now!

I don't find them loud. Occasionally on a marble or hard tile floor I notice them scrape or tap just a very little.

I've had some installed on my shoes because I wear down the toes a lot in the first few wearings. No noticeable noise on most surfaces, except an occasional slight scraping sound on pavement.

i sorta like the idea of putting my shoes through their paces, and then re-crafting them anew. rather than try to maintain some sort of delicateness

In my experience, yes. On tile you can certainly hear it, not so bad on wood. Also, be wary of the sound you make for others! I can always tell a well-heeled gentleman approaching me in London by the sound his shoes make - tip tap tip tap.
