Look how thick the contemporary BB collar is:

compared to the thin, soft, and floppy collar of old:

BBC, a shrinking collar was one of the common artifacts of continued wear. A lot of W.F. Buckley photos show this phenom, but it was a common thing among most of us who wore the old collar.

Weren't the old BB collars compeltely unlined ? The newer ones definitely have some interlining ... don't know why.

I'll see if I can get a good pic of my Mercer collars with a tie on.

I remember the old ones as being unlined. The BBBFs have a unfused interlining, similar I assume to other BB makes coming out of the Carolina factory.

Thanks, Vox - great info.

BBC, the vintage Sero and Hathaway ones have very nice rolls. They both have a pleasing liberty-bell shape to it with the tie that I really like. The LE hyde park is not bad either.

The only problem with BBBF is that the fabric is so beefy - maybe that is what is causing the "Eye-talian" look that Doc mentions. However, I like them for tie-less wear under a sweater.

Here is a pic of a recent J. Press collar - from An affordable wardrobe. J. Press shirts are heavily fused. But notice the location of the buttonhole on the collar points.

I *think* the below shirt is a older BB - notice location of buttonholes, and how floppy the collar is. Vox/BBC, what do you guys think?

As a disinterested party, who has not worn a BD since circa 1970, but who
was a fanatic about roll during the IVY Golden years of the 50s and the 60s,
the J Press shirt above exemplifies what I insisted upon, before I moved on
to different collars.

Manton's CEGO nails it for me.

One of my fave Brooks shirts was a popover, without dress shirt sizing (just small, medium, or large). Ha a great collar. Discontinued, of course.

Those wider spread/longer Italian BD collars have grown on me. I used to think they looked weird.
