We just had a very civil (well, by SF standards) exchange in CE. Not that anything was accomplished, but at least everyone was communicating. Downright enjoyable.

Who gets to define these "fundamental human rights"? Isn't that part of the problem? All these other people that disagree with you are getting to do the defining, and you have no better justification to be the definer than they do. In fact, in our paradigm of representative democracy, they have a better justification, i.e. majority position. Think on that and then think of how dismissing this concept would put everyone on the same level, in attempting to construct a society and/or change certain aspects of one.

Every gridlock argument in CE occurs between people who believe in natural human rights and those that don't. The pragmatists can argue amongst themselves what will best serve humanity, and the rights-believers can step in every once in a while and tell them they don't really have that authority, but until the fundamental disagreement is resolved, all the conversation that takes place on top of it is pretty stupid. IMO.
