Louis Theroux's BBC documentaries
For American audiences, start with the "Louis Theroux's Weird Weekends" (UK: complete title)

1. Televangelists (15 January 1998) - Himself - Presenter
2. UFOs (22 January 1998) - Himself - Presenter
3. Appreciation (29 January 1998) - Himself - Presenter
4. Survivalists (5 February 1998) - Himself - Presenter
5. Informercials (12 May 1999) - Himself - Presenter
6. Swingers (26 May 1999) - Himself - Presenter
7. Black Nationalism (2 June 1999) - Himself - Presenter, Writer (written by)
8. Demolition Derby (9 June 1999) - Himself - Presenter
9. Off-Off Broadway (15 June 1999) - Himself - Presenter
10. Wrestling (6 July 1999) - Himself - Presenter
11. Self-Fulfillment (25 September 2000) - Himself - Presenter
12. India: Enlightenment (2 October 2000) - Himself - Presenter
13. Boer Separatists (9 October 2000) - Himself - Presenter
14. Body-Building (16 October 2000) - Himself - Presenter
15. Looking for Love (23 October 2000) - Himself - Presenter
16. Rap (30 October 2000) - Himself - Presenter

Really funny and insightful at the same time. Some episodes are also available on YouTube. Search "Louis Theroux". His earlier TV Nation series are not as good. His later "When Louis Met..." series are worth a watch if you are familiar with British celebrities.

A few recent documentaries are worth a watch.

1) Man on Wire (2008) - about Philippe Petit, a tightrope walker's daring exploits and how this dramatically changes him and his relationships. Excellent.

2) Running the Sahara (2008) - about 3 different men running across the Sahara desert through 6 countries. Narrated by Matt Damon and supported by National Geography. Pretty good.

3) Religulous (2008) - Narrated by Bill Maher. Pretty sharp and funny. Avoid if you are religious.

I am looking for good documentaries on philosophy or general existential matters. I remember reading in one thread about really well made doc. movie about topics of life (meaning of existence and etc.) , but I cannot find that post anymore.
Anyway, your suggestions are welcome:
Any documentaries about mathematics and science are also very welcomed.

I highly recommend doc. movie: "N is a number" about "homeless" mathematical genius Paul Erdos.

Not sure if it's been mentioned already in this thread, but the 26-part British TV series The World at War is superb, and perhaps the definitive documentary series about WWII.

An epic thirty-two hours long, with narration by Sir Laurence Olivier, it cost around £1m to make in 1973 (equivalent to around £11m today), and took four years to complete.
