Is this hatred something that will ever change? They love it over at Andy's, but I've always hated it.

Don't you wear cut-away collar? It's a general believe that Windsor knot looks best with cut-away.

That's the only collar with which the Windsor isn't wholly inappropriate. But even with a cutaway collar, the four-in-hand is generally the best option.

I think Windsor knot has an advantage in the following situations:
- The tie is long (with respect to the person's height), or
- The tie is not substantial enough, or
- Both

i personally prefer the shelby/pratt knot with a cutaway or wide spread. It fills a bit more space than a four-in-hand yet is smaller than a windsor. That being said, I also use the shelby with OCBDs

Aw, come on! I think if you're gonna wear a wide spread collar, fill the spread with a thick, substantial looking knot. Its powerful, symmetrical, and it looks high class. I agree with a point collar/button down collar it looks marsupialed, but with a wide spread it lends a certain weight to your look. This is why its good to know several kinds of knots, because many times anything bigger than a FIH will look stupid, but sometimes a shirt and suit are just begging for it. The mistake most people make is they don't pull it tight enough or pinch the bottom part of it, and it ends up looking like this:

Which is, of course, epic ******* fail. But this:

Happens to look sharp.

It's not wrong; but the look would be improved with a nice tidy four-in-hand. Maybe a Half-Windsor.

hate is a strong word for a method of tying a strip of silk that goes around your neck

This sums things up perfectly. I'm constantly surprised at how most men have no idea how to tie a tie. I've seen four in hands that end up looking like that

The right photo is significantly better. My poor photoshopping skills aside, the smaller knot is simply more elegant looking compared to the clumsy windsor, which draws too much attention to itself.
