So is there something more current than CS:S but more balanced? I doubt I'm going to understand all the 'perks' and builds etc. I want something I can pick up and start pwning right away and just get better at the maps and shooting well. I don't want to think or learn too much.

Uncharted 2 online has a really basic learning curve and its community is still somewhat thriving.

Simplicity in shooters has pretty much vanished these days. Haven't played in a while, but from what I've heard, they're even adding a bunch of bullshit weapons to TF2, a game that was beautifully elegant when released.

Anyone in here play Heroes of Newerth? Dota 6.65 is interesting but since picking HoN up I haven't gone back.

Honestly, the perks and builds and everything make a fairly minor difference in gameplay. Certainly less than, say, the class system in TF2.

The akimbo 1887s were (partially) patched and knife builds, while are annoying, are not overpowered (although they approach that on some maps with the care package glitch).

I think MW2 is the most natural extension of CS right now.

What's a good FPS for someone who's starting to get into FPS?

Sigh.. I play it way too much. j, you have PS3 right? Download the beta for MAG and see if you like it (beta is free). It's very teamplay oriented, and I read that it's really good. Anyone playing Darksiders? can't decide if I want to pick it up or not.

The Halo series is actually very, very elementary. MP has a rock/paper/scissors balance between weapons, grenades, and melee. The community is also robust, although the learning curve might be steeper now that the game's been out for 2-3 years.

Nexuiz. Free, fast paced. Very reminiscent of Quake World IMO. Good place to start.
