The level of commercialism and outlandish shill through the magazine is the main issue IMO. Still better than anything else out there - but annoying. The article about Hugo Boss's HAND TAILORED LINE for example was cringeworthy in its use of superlatives and disguised advertisement.

It reads like an infomercial for Shamwow

believe it or not there's yet another article in issue 7 on hugo boss. seems a tad dodgy to me.

although i must say the prose of most of the articles is quite a joy to read, especially one about truffles in one of the earlier issues that always brings a smile to my face.

i do think though that the articles on tailor/shoemakers/artisans are generally too positive in that there's not much detached critique. they read almost ad verbatim from the various advertising spiel.

and the ever-expanding section on events at the back threatens to turn the mag into yet another nouveau riche-catering tome, of which seemingly several hundred exist in asia

btw the article in issue 7 on flirtation is quite a hoot.

I am. I don't "read" watch magazines though - I flip through them and look at the pictures.

Like I said it's a great mag but it does have alot of ads. Still worth a suscribtion.

Really? Based on all the positive reviews, I had thought there was little to no advertising in the mags. Still waiting on the mags chobo mailed 3+ weeks ago, as well as #1 ordered direct. Damn slow mail!

I think you're misled if you think there's little advertising. I still really enjoy The Rake but it is very very commercial.

Someone mentioned that this magazine is distributed for free on Singapore airline flights and cost significantly less in Asia (where available). I am just saying; without commercial content The Rake would have been closed yesterday. I bet they are loosing money on every issue.
I don't mind commercials as long as they are originally shot by the staff. Some nice photography in issue 6.

Certainly there's no shortage of advertisements, but most are attractive, the items are expensive, and the paper is so thick that the ads don't really convey that "cheap" vibe I instinctively sense when paging through flimsy Captain Morgan ads.

I hear ya and agree/understand that you can't really publish a qualitÃ

mag without some advertising dollars. However, I haven't taken out a full subscription because I'm not convinced they can keep up the good content over time...

Did you get him to sign your copy of Esquire with the Nivea ad?
