mini burgers are great and filling. To make them special have interesting toppings like bbq sauce, aioli, flavored mustards, thousand island dressing, etc.

freshly ground pepper

That's not pizza, that's some ungodly California amalgamation of random crap on pizza crust.

Soak water chestnuts in soy sauce and brown sugar for an hour or so (or longer!) in a bowl. Pick them out of the bowl and wrap in liberal amounts of bacon and toothpick. Grill (broil? I dont know, I'm Australian! - What ever heats from above) until bacon is crispy and serve. Easy way to to this is to have them toothpicked and ready to go on the tray you're going to cook them on.
Handy tip: line baking tray with alu foil.

Not knowing what your set up is some of these may not be appropriate:

Mini / bite sized pies (can be as "high end" as you like/budget allows) - relatively mess free as can be eaten in one/two bites
If you have an outside area, a Pig on a Spit would be pretty memorable
Mini/personal boxes of noodles / curry w rice
Mezze plate (note this has already been mentioned)
Chopped fruit

For party food, it's hard to beat spaghetti, whole corn on the cob, and lobster in the shell (or whole crabs, if you prefer.)

Slice your own gyros is also pretty good...things get interesting when every guest has a sharp knife in their hands.

For sweets I would do bobbing for apples...if you want to fancy it up, make them caramel apples.

Also: make sure there is enough Splenda.

Lobster rolls. Damn good. Lobster meat on a bun with some mayo and butter. The bad news is it can be expensive. The good news is I can never eat more than one and yet I am super happy. And they're very easy to prepare.

Lebanese mezze is a good idea.

I was recently at party where the host served Whole Foods tater tots with a drizzle of truffle oil and a sprinkle of chives. Once I got over the memories of school lunch, they were damned good snacks with drinks.

My advice would be to go for a colorful spread. Too many cocktail parties feature beige/tan food--little crab cakes, stuff in pastry shells, fried items. I often make a fava and dandelion leaf spread as an alternative to that other ubiquitous tan party food, humus. I also frequently serve crostini with tomatoes or red peppers.
