Hello everyone.

I'm in the market for a warm down jacket. I'm currently debating between two models.

The McMurdo Northface Parka (in brown) $299:

or

The Marmot Ama Dablam Down Jacket (in gargoyle) $199:

The Parka is warmer and will probably handle water/wind better, but the Marmot is also very warm. I'm leaning towards the Parka simply because it covers my butt, an underrated feature when you are in the bitter cold.

Weather wise, I split my time between Boston and NYC.

I have my share of wool coats and can't afford a nice shearling coat at the moment. I did also look at Canada Goose's line but they are much more expensive.

Let me know your thoughts, suggestions, etc. Thanks!

my 15 YO Patagonia parka. my thoughts: - I want something that covers my butt/mid thigh. that really helps - I want something with a hood that doesn't look ridiculous if it's not on - I want something with a weatherproof coating (ie goretex, etc) so far, my favorite is the new LL Bean Baxter parka http://cdni.llbean.com/is/image/wim/...id=330&hei=295 it's pretty similar to the The North Face McMurdo

I can recommend the Heli-Arctic from Canada Goose. It may be more expensive, but it really is a great coat.

(Not that I paid that, but in my part of the world it retails for $1200

for the Moncler/Canada Goose question, i would say Moncler wins for looks, but Canada Goose wins for protection from the cold. depends on you what is more important to you.

makewayhomer, that Baxter parka is a great suggestion. i'm going to a retail LL Bean store nearby to try it out. it is $100 cheaper than the McMurdo and has a 650 fill vs the McMurdo 550, so it should be less bulky.

this LL Bean jacket lacks the hood of the Marmot but I'm also considering it in addition to the parka.

If you're interested in functional pieces consider Millet.fr or Feathered Friends or Rab's Neutrino Endurance, which I own and happy to report its toasty warm.

I have an RLPL wool down jacket that I bought many years ago. Remains one of my favorite winter coats to this day. I love it.

Sure will take some later. It has alligator zipper pull things, which I also thought was a nice touch.

That's the Manitoba. Retails for $600 in America. Wish I had the $$$.
