Most comfortable and thin (cooling) undershirts

I've been going with 3$ 100% cotton t-shirts from Walmart, but the feel a little scratchy after a few washes and are too thick... what's the best source for thin (but still thick enough to stop sweat from touching the dress shirt) and comfortable cotton shirts? Are some 100% cotton shirts better than others? I'm not looking for anything stylish, just something that stops the sweat while keeping me cool.

I use ExOfficio undershirts. They are not cotton however, they are a nylon/lycra blend. They are also not cheap at $30.00 plus apiece. However, they are very thin and comfortable, they wick away moisture and keep you cool. They also last forever - I've had my current ones for nearly 4 years, and no holes or wear to speak of. So, like many well made clothes, the intial cost is higher, but you won't need to replace them for a long time.

Perhaps I'm alone on this, but I was given a Burberry undershirt as a gift on birthday (thank you, mom).
I was surprised by how soft and breathable it was.

Is this just my experience, or have others been surprised by them?

I swear by Tommy John. A bit pricy, but the fit and cooling ability is second-to-none.

I balk at high-end underwear, but the Nordstrom branded ones that I bought are really nice. I can't imagine that there's not serious diminishing returns above that level.

I like Calvin Klein undershirts. Not a Wally World bargain, but they're not a waste of good money either.

Theres a person on the web called "The Undershirt Guy" who does reviews on numerous brands. The undershirt ranked at #1 on his top 5 are ones called "ribbed tees". Regardless, I'd go for Tommy John's though. They're ranked #2 just because its more expensive :/ but really its worth it.

I have found the 2(x)ist pima cotton athletic undershirts to be extremely comfortable. They are very soft, however, the fit is not as good since they are produced in Thailand instead of Peru.

I bought my husband Ribbed Tees based on the undershirtguy's recommendations and thought they were just okay - they stretched out way too quickly (like after the second wear). I may give the Tommy John's a shot though, the only thing I can see wrong is that they may be TOO long.

I'm a big fan of UnderArmour undershirts. They make some called Cooltech or Heattech (I forget which is which, but one of them is designed to keep you cool). Kept me frigid all summer.

I couldn't find either of those names on underarmour's website- were they shirts you actually put in the freezer or something before wearing or were you exaggerating when you said 'frigid'?
