Why do americans never say 'goodbye' when hanging up the phone?

Well then, I think your sample dialogue is incorrect. I never have conversations that end so abruptly.

A rake from a former phase of my life favored the phrase "see you in the funny papers"

Watch any american tv show and you'll see, they never say anything, they just hang up.

Good point, this is a glaring omission on my part as well. Going forward I think I'll be closing posts with "peace out, bro-ham."

Peace out, bro-ham

What's with these threads lately? I've been noticing a lot of threads about perceived issues that don't actually exist.

This only happens in Entourage and the Wire.

This was my most recent conversation, not a good bye, or take care anywhere. I don't know if his Good Luck counted, but it was rather abrupt:

I've never had a phone conversation with an friend that didn't end with good bye, it's just movies.

Now, try having conversations with Koreans on the phone.
"I'm busy today"
"eeeeeeeeeeeen"
"eeeen"

I've also noticed this about phone conversations in the movies. I think the abrupt end to phone calls is typically used to make the character seem dominant, decisive, big-timer, etc.

I like to end my phone calls by saying, "Suck it!"

It's really only on TV that phone conversations end with a clever remark and a hang-up without saying some form of bye and/or getting any acknowledgment from the other party.
