If it's under 90 proof, I drink it neat. If it's over, I will usually splash a little water in there, Fiji or Voss. I don't get too scientific, just splash some in there. I try not to use ice on higher proof bourbons as the cold seems to affect the body, and I find it tastes better as close to room temperature as I can get it..

I always sip neat, then add water, sip, add, sip -- all whiskys and whiskies have a dilution level that best corresponds to both palate and mood.

Any reason for the specific brands of water as opposed to just generic store bought?

The more pure, the better. Tap water and many bottled waters are full of impurities that alter taste.

This is why I'm so glad I work in a research lab where we have nanopure water that I can "borrow" and take home.

Couldn't you use a Brita pitcher or some other sort of filter on the tap water? Admittedly, that's what I do and I can't tell the difference between that and Zephyrhills.

This has happened at least a couple of times, and each time it catches me by surprise:

I'm strolling through Specs and looking at the Scotch whiskeys, and a bottle catches my eye: it's got a blue label, clear contents, and priced $5-ish. It's got one of those Scottish names, the sort that you can only say while gargling gravel. I think: Holy Cow - Deal of the Century!@

Then I read carefully: Spring Water, taken at the distillery. Just f$@#king water.

The water affects the whisky. Purists only dilute their whiskies with the water it was fermented with, in fact.

picked up another bottle of woodford reserve today..

there was one bottle of eagle rare 10 yr left at the shop.

...haven't tried eagle before, but I'm feeling buyer's remorse simply because I didn't try something new. what the hell was I thinking? I may stop back over the weekend and pick up the eagle D:
