Not knowing what Gore Vidal looked like, I assumed he was some crazy nut hanging around the library. I just said, "oh yes, I enjoyed both 1776 and Burr". He smiled then walked away.

The next time I saw him, he was signing my book. I felt like such an ass.

Ass being the key word.

Last 3 or 4 weeks: Mischa Barton chased by paparazzi on the Bowery, Sienna Miller at the coffee shop, Ron Perlman strolling around, Jeff Goldblum reading on a bench, Brooke Shields hanging with the kids, Willem Dafoe nodding at me as I walked out of my building.

We don't get that many celebrities walking around the streets in Australia.

The only time I really remember seeing celebrities was one day about a year or so ago - was standing next to Eric Bana reading movie-related magazines at Borders, then later that day walked past Geoffrey Rush at a cafe with a cigarette in one hand and a big class of wine in the other.

Wish I had some more exciting stories to tell.

Best ever was meeting Charles Barkley in a steak joint in Atlanta. Sent him a round of drinks (I grew up in Philly as a 76ers fan) and he came over to say thanks and invited us to have a cigar with him. Very cool.

Chuvalo was one cool cat. I used to see him all the time, but by then he was a celebrity "collector" for some not too nice fellows. Tragic personal life.

"He's the toughest guy I ever fought", said Ali of Chuvalo.

I hope you gave Perlman. Goldblum, and Dafoe invites to the SF B&S Yard Sale.

Of course. They said they'd try to make it.

You have no interest in Mischa or Sienna attending?
