I used my SAB in much worse weather over in DC than we're having right now in the SF Bay Area.

Can anyone tell me which is made stronger?

A solid stick

2-piece

or a steel tubed umbrella?

I automatically assumed a solid stick, but I think I might be wrong. Personally, I don't like the slim frame designs.

I was told both at Brigg and Smith, that solid sticks are the strongest, since the umbrellas are expected to be used as walking sticks.

My experience is that the # of ribs is more important than the one vs. two piece construction for typical umbrella use. I have both and don't see much difference between a one-piece 8-rib umbrella and a metal tube one. I do see a big difference with my 10-rib brolly on a windy day.

Yes, I think I'm more interested in James Smith's tbh. I guess if it's all about the ribbing, Brooks brother has 16... but I don't think it's made from a single stick.

I wish it had a better taper like other two pieces they offer.

I've had my two 8 rib Briggs for a few years now (solid stick cherry and double ribbed golfer with the thick metal shaft) and find them remarkably strong against oiur south coast winds - would a 10 rib be even stronger??

By definition, yes. Two of my three 8-rib Brigg ended up with bent ribs in NY weather. My 10-rib Smith seems more likely to lift me off the ground than to bend (at least so far - knock on wood)
