on the bbc book programme Open Book they are exploring neglected classics, five novels this week and five next, as recommended by contemporary authors. Of the five reviewed in the first programme, The Polyglots sound the most interesting to me.

House of leaves. I haven't had a chance to get through much of it (midterms, assignments, etc.), but so far I really like it. A very interesting novel.

It's very interesting to me for a number of reasons. So far, beyond being autobiographic by nature and telling me more about HM's life, it's a book about running (obviously) and about the creative process of writing - two things that are completely foreign to me. It's also interesting because the style of his writing in this autobio form is actually quite different from his novel writing style - which makes a lot of sense IMO when you read more about his creative process.

Enlightening read about Venitian (and by extension Italian) politics in the renaissance. Very tough book to finish. About 3 months reading it and still 100 of (300+) to go.

Can't read anything else until I'm done.

I actually started reading Thus Spake Zarathustra first. However, while reading through the appendix I saw a note that stated Nietzsche recommended reading some of his others prior to undertaking Zarathustra. I happened to have Beyond Good and Evil in my "to read" stack, and it was one he listed as prep reading for Zarathustra, so I decided to take his advice.

I studied a fair amount of philosophy in school, but, while I learned a lot about much of Western Philosophy, it was sort of a "greatest hits." I learned a bit about many of the major philosophies/philosophers, but I didn't have the chance to really study the bulk of their works. Now that I'm done with school I have stacks of works I want to read that will let me get much deeper in to their philosophies.

The Hyperion Omnibus. It's quite captivating, although Simmons seems to recycle a lot of concepts in Ilium/Olympos which I read before.
