I called back to get the measurements on the Mediums:

Cotton Rib Sweater Jacket (Medium): Chest 43, Shoulder 16.25, Length 26.5, Sleeve 33.5
Military Mockneck Wool Cardigan (Medium): Chest 43, Shoulder 16, Length 27, Sleeve 33.5

Length measurements are from highest point of shoulder. Sleeve measurements are from center of back, across the shoulder and down the arm.

OK. Chest would work for me, but I would need longer sleeves and more across the shoulders. & if the chest is just 43 and my chest is 43, that makes it pretty snug. So I guess it depends on all other variables. It kind of surprises me how exactly I fit into the size charts!

Had an SA urge me to try on a medium j. crew sweater once, and when I came out of the fitting room, he immediately shook his head no and pronounced that I was a Large.

I'm confused by the measurements she gave me. I can see that the chest is too large, but the shoulders and sleeves seem to place me as a Medium. I'm going to have to measure the ones I have at home to see if they match up.

Remember that the material is also a factor. If it's thicker, take that into consideration when thinking about how it fits in the chest. Also consider that some sweaters are meant to look a little bulky, especially heavy cardigans. I'd rather have a slightly relaxed fit and feel in a thick sweater than err on the small side and feel constricted. (See Daniel Craig in Casino Royale, fo example--that cardigan is anything but small and yet looks like a perfect fit.)

Both of these items are quite thick. Perhaps I have the right size after all. Like I said, I'll post pictures and see what everyone thinks. I'd love to not have to go through the hassle and expense of a return.

imo when it comes to sweaters, it's as much about comfort as looks. You should be able to slip it on and forget about it, i.e., won't be bugged by feeling either bound or swimming in it. If you're comfortable, chancesare it's the right size.

I'm not entirely sure. When I went to pay for it, I expected to pay full price. But the cashier rang it up as being on sale. There was a smaller microcheck red for $29.99. So I don't know if she got confused, or if the large check was on sale.

This is the problem I have with sweaters. I'm about 15 lbs lighter than Keroberos and when I try a medium sweater, the sleeves are too short and the sweater itself is short. A Large will have the right sleeve and body length, but I will look like a flying squirrel due to the extra material on the sides.

Would a tailor be able to take in the sides of one of J crews Merino Wool sweaters?

I love that cotton rib sweater. I have the indigo and the material is pretty thick. Fwiw I got the small I'm 5'7 160ish ..38" chest with a 32 waist.

No, just put on cape and run around going, "Ah, Bullwinkle!"

I measured both items at lunch. As they are knitwear and therefore stretchy, some variance in is expected. The measurements J.Crew gave over the phone are spot on with one exception. My Cotton Rib Sweater-Jacket is 17" across the shoulder, whereas the CR indicated 16.25".

got the chambray shirt, and I love it.

though at 2x price, the shirt is WAY better than the one from GAP.

There is no comparison with the GAP shirt. The J Crew is much better. I just still think everything in the store is overpriced; maybe the cure is to go into the GAP and see difference.
