I think the criticism of my shoes that the single sole doesn't complement the storm welting has some traction, and I don't want to lose the storm welting. Anyway, I don't think double soles would make the shoes unwearable with suits. In my opinion, the difference isn't so great that you could tell unless you were looking at the shoes alone.

You're probably being sarcastic, but for those who think this is the case, just remember that the height of the heel is the only measurement of relevance. Double soles don't generally have thicker heels, so no difference in height.

Don't know your weight but probably stiffness is not an issue for big guys.

i am on the heavier side

...but for me there is no existing rule. from my personal experience, shoes do not always feel the same, if this makes sense. and in the rare ocassions my feet do hurt or the soles start burning, it's 99% with a single sole.

also i have the the feeling the different toe spring of a double sole makes them more flexible. this may due, cause the majority of my shoes is custom made and are "balanced" for me.

I had Topy's put on a brand new pair of Florsheim (India) Kenmoor's. I feel like I'm walking on blocks of wood. Should have broken them in first.

It has a function, at least it used to.

I find that rain can eventually seep through a single leather sole, if you walk for an extended period of time.

Double leather with storm welt - I have yet to experience any rain leaks.

What is the rule for knowing when to have them resoled?

You should resole it before it reaches the next layer of leather.

If you reach the next layer, they can usually still be resoled without much drama.

If you reach the third layer, some cobblers have problems or charge more due to more work involved.

This is also true for heels but, heels can be replaced in their entirety without too much drama.
