I was going to get the Alfred Sargent Epsom (actually £155) but I find that all their 'classic' collection shoes are of corrected grain leather. So does anyone have any better ideas? I'm not in the US so Allen Edmonds and that other one(Aldens?) are out of the question.

Thanks ever so much.

So these are not CG? I was very surprised when Sargent told me theirs were CG.

I don't think the Epsom is CG. Skyvalet has them on sale not, btw.

Have a look at this, a PM I was sent by the company on this site:

Hi Sir,

Re; Epsom, It is indeed corrected, my name is Chay Cooper and I am the Manager at AS, If you need any help with other styles feel free to email me at [email protected]
Epsom is from the Classic range which are mostly corrected leathers. All shoes can be purchased direct from the factory if you so wish.

If you would ever like to visit and have a look round you are very welcome, just let me know and we can arrange something to suit.

Kindest regards,

Chay.

Careful about arranging a visit; next thing you know, you're ordering MTO Sargents with dope bevelled waists and gorgeous sole treatment like clintonf.

I suppose I'd have to already own a decent pair of shoes before I got to the Sargent factory so they didn't think I was a joker!

You need to set your sights higher.

You are not a million miles from Northampton, the center of English shoemaking. Northampton is full of company stores that sell closeouts and seconds at big discounts, often 50%+. The seconds are usually almost perfect. You often have to spend quite some time examining the shoe to find something that you guess might be the reason it was made a second.

So got to Northampton some Saturday and have a look around. You might well get a very nice shoe from, say, C&J in your price range.

Yes they are. I have a pair. They're corrected grain. The man from Alfred Sargent said Epsom were corrected grain. Epsom = corrected grain.
