I have a tailor/fitter who is selling Scabal fabrics. He's retailing a mtm for $1,395. He says these retail over $2,000. He says the price he's offering is a detail. I need some opinions as I'm very unaware of Scabal products and pricepoints. Is this a good deal?

Thanks,
Gary Tsai

Steven Aver offers MTM suits with some Scabal fabrics for less than $1000USD. If the Scabal selection he offers is to your liking, I'd go with him.

Scabal fabrics are very nice but $1300-1400 is high for MTM but if the tailor that you would use is very good then it may be worth it.

In HK or one of the traveling tailors from HK you can get 2 peice Scabal fabric for about $1400 and you would get fittings if you were in HK.

Woops, I thought that the OP was talking about Scabal's own mtm operation and not about mtm in general with Scabal fabrics... I like some Scabal tweeds, but would use other cloth makers for most thing.

They're all super 130's is what he says. I've spent $1,200 on a Zegna suit from him. I told myself I'd never go over 1,000 but I figured with this Zegna fabric it wasn't a bad deal for mtm. Never heard of Scabal. Knowing that it's super 130's, deal or no deal? Again, he says they retail for over 2,000 and $1,395 is considered a deal.

Steven Aver has quite a few Zegna fabrics as well, all for under $1,000USD. You can't get any better than that, I'd say, for the price.

Yea I checked out Steven Aver's work...I e-mailed him about some stuff...where he get's them manufactered and so on. I do like the tailor...though he's not as trendy or into the mildly trendy scene so a bit difficult to tell him what I like. I go to http://www.alandavidnyc.com/ He doesn't tailor it himself. He takes my measurements and they get manufactured in Canada. I think this is a common practice from tailors in NYC. If there are any necessary alterations, they will do it at the store but the whole suit is made in Canada.

If you don't like style why don't you try one of the traveling tailors like Gordon Yao, WW chan or Y william Yu. YWY has a shop in NY.

I took at look at Yu's site. Couldn't really find much info about him. Though the thought of going to a "traveling tailor" sounds expensive.

So I guess the consense of this thread is that a $1,395 Scabal MTM suit is not a bad price if you like your tailor and it's in the super 130's. Steve Avener's looks like a great deal, though not much selection. But if you're looking for the basics I'd consider Steve.

Agree?

I think Steven said, if memory serves, that he's getting more fabric selections in soon. Whether any of these new varieties are from Scabal, I do not know.

Gentlemen

Great forum here

I am a travelling tailor here in southern Ontario Canada

My intent is only to enlighten the readers and participants on this thread

Scabal fabrics are best of breed , chosen by Europe's bespoke tailors

In Canada the wholesale price on Scabal fabric starts at $100.00per yard

Generally the yield needed to create a garment is 3 5/8 yd Checks call for 1/2. Yd more, as do tall models
Oversize can call fo up to the moon,

If you are purchasing a suit from a hong kongtailor chances are you are not buying bespoke
You are buying custom stock to which is a stock suit made to order from a computer driven application
Of allowing plus and minus on the sleeve length, waist of coat and the jacket length

This is a great way to buy a suit if you like and realize bespoke fabrics out of the book are the best cloths
In my field I practice both bespoke and custom stock using my Holland&Sheery,Scabal and Dormeuil fabrics
If a gent is a stock fit And wishes to employ my services for Scabal or the others I simply ask him to send me a cloth number off the websites that the cloth houses provide
I ask the gent if he wears ready made, if so I simply scan him a simple how to measement form and we are done

Of course price is given well in advance

Never buy a suit that the Hong Kong tailor calls made to measure in it does not include a basted try on while the suit is in a shell. State
I doubt that is done,
