I loved the first one. I really, really hope this one isn't terrible, but I'm afraid it will be. I think it could be great if done well, but I'm not holding my breath.

I disagree. I haven't seen his last few, but The Doors, Natural Born Killers, and Any Given Sunday were all post-1990, and I really liked all three. U-Turn was pretty good too, and I remember liking JFK, though I haven't seen it in quite some time.

Looking for Fidel and Persona Non Grata were both good as well, though admittedly they were documentaries and not fiction.
