Ok seriously, people can stop suggesting melatonin. I've been taking it for months and anybody who thinks it's even in the same ballpark as Ambien is delusional. It does virtually nothing for occasional anxiety-related insomnia, which is what I have. I am only interested in non-benzodiazepine prescription sleep aids.

Yeah melatonin is crap.

I take about 1.5 grams of mag citrate every night before bed, it knocks me out and I sleep very well. On nights that the magnesium isn't enough, I break a Benadryl tablet in half and take that.

magnesium
GABA
Theanine

all better choices than melatonin

Why are you eliminating the benzos? I like some of them quite a bit. Short half life, helped me get to sleep, and then out of the system quickly.

I never had any problems with ambien though, aside from the fact that it wasn't strong enough to put me to sleep after a while.

I tried Rozeram I think. Took it once or twice, didn't fall asleep, wasn't sure if I could mix it with a handful of benzos, so had a horrible night.

Oh, and I agree, melatonin is crap for serious sleep problems.

Not to be a jerk but I meditate for 20 minutes before I sleep. This always does the trick.
I have a crap liver so I can't take pills too often.

Yeah Ativan + one scotch on the rocks does me right.

With that being said I'm going to go pick up the magnesium javyn suggested to see what happens.

I´m a true addict to sleep, until 14 hours a day. I changed my matrees to viscoelastic and took melatonin and now I sleep 10 hours a day. true!

Gaba? Could you give me more info please?

I've just always heard they are bad news due to addictiveness, tolerance, long term effects etc.

Yikes. Luckily I don't get any of the weird side effects with Ambien, just some very light visual hallucination if I try to stay awake after taking it.

I guess it depends on you. If you have issues with addiction, then maybe benzos are bad.

I never had issues with addiction to benzos. Tolerance, sure, but that happened with ambien too. Anything you take for chronic insomnia will have tolerance problems.

Not sure if you got your answer ,but Lunesta leaves no side effects for me. However it will not give you a full-night sleep even in it’s highest dose (3mg). It will vary by your weight, but expect from 3 to 5 hours of sleep from 3mg tablet.
Perfect for falling asleep or taking in the middle of the night if became awakened.
Fresh head in the morning.
