I am familiar with the Cinque 5, I've had their 2001. Excellent wine, but that baby needs time. The 2001 could have lasted 15-20 years in the bottle, easily. I'm not surprised that the 2004 was so dense.

If you don't mind dropping a little coin on the Italians, the 2004 Oreno that I tasted not too long ago was spectacular. I will be seeking out a handful of bottles when bonus time rolls around.

I have heard of the Oreno. Is it predominantly Sangiovese? Tonight I think I'm going to have some cheese and a bottle of 2006 Le Volte with the girlfriend.

50% Sangiovese, 25% Cab and 25% Merlot. 95WS, Top-100 list as well. IMO competes head to head with the likes of Sassicaia, but for a much lower price.

I'm a fan of Le Volte, a little peek at Ornellaia for about $22. I've had it 3-4 times in the past 5 months, excellent with food.

Thanks for clearing that up. You seem to share my interest in Italian wines. Have you had Ilatraia from Brancaia? Excellent.

my posts tend to be all over Italian wine.

And I have had the Ilatria. Sweet label on that IGT and even better wine. I'm a big fan of Oracolo as well, concistently excellent producer.

and how did this work out?

No wine for me tonight, my throat has been bothering me and wine seems to make is presence known there.

Tonight the Le Volte was left in the cellar. I have a couple of cases of it so decided to skip it since we were out to dinner and the restaurant we went to has a good list. Instead, I chose a Stags Leap Napa Cab since my girlfriend really enjoys California wines. It was a delightful wine but very tight at first. The most enjoyable part was experiencing the wine evolve as it took more and more air. I will post more about it tomorrow when I am sober. The copious amount of after dinner drinks take their toll.

Yes. It was the "Artemis" indeed. It was a nice bottle of wine and would definitely drink again, but if Jordan or Phelps are on the same list I might be inclined to go with one of those instead.

Stags Leap has quite the historic past. Some of their wines have slipped as of pretty recent, unfortunately. I'm not quite sure, but I don't think Winiarski is there any more.

For sure. During our recent trip to Napa, I'd put the VG Artemis quite way down the list when compared with the 05s and 06s from Duckhorn, Viader, Camus

, Shafer. But, still a VG wine. IIRC, the Artemis is $20 -$30 cheaper than the cabs I mentioned. In wine terms, to be fair, that is often a gulf. If you can get the Ridgeline I rave about, try that, especially if you like the jammy Napa Cabs as much as I do (although, from Alexander Valley). Half the price of Caymus and 75% as good. Yum.

Well yea a bottle of Artemis $70, Phelps, Jordan and the others you mentiond are surely $100+ and some north of $150 so that should be considered. So the Artemis starts to become much more appealing at its price point.

I am going to keep those selections in mind. I am not very well-versed when it comes to California, well actually the United States all together. That's a whole different animal from the world of Italian wine I'm familiar with.

+1.

I'm quite good with the French, too. But I think Italy has the best values of the 3.
