Just finished Havana Nocturne. Pretty good read, and a fascinating look at the Mob and Havana before la revolucion.

I finished American Pastoral by Philip Roth last night. Absolutely crushing and amazing. I wondered how I could possibly relate to the perspective of an upper-class Jew living in Newark, NJ, but the devastation and characters were universal.

Do you find it a bit nebulous as far as real-world advice and a bit heavy on the "enlightenment lingo"? Just started Joy and even though he shares nearly all of my high-level views on humanity and the plight of societies today, it doesn't strike me as offering a lot of practical advice (yet). He also loves to throw around authoritative dogmatic statements, which grates on me a little bit.

I just finished a run through the second half of C.S. Forester's Hornblower series:

Ship of the Line
Flying Colours
Commodore Hornblower
Lord Hornblower
Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies

Also just finished The Great Divorce, by C.S. Lewis

Just started Heretics, by G.K. Chesterton with Orthodoxy to come right behind it.

I'm figuring out another novel to start.

Once I finish Inner Circle, I'll start The Girl with the Snake Tattoo. Liked the movie.

About 1/3 through When We Were Orphans by Kazuo Ishiguro. Next will be The Remains of the Day.

How is that? I read Remains and Never Let Me Go, but never the Orphans one.

Liked The Remains of the Day. Did not like When We Were Orphans. YMMV, obviously.

So far it's pretty good. As I mentioned earlier, I am only a third of the way through. The beginning involves a lot of back story and character building involving the protagonists earlier life which seems somewhat boring. I have just reached the point where all of this backstory has become significant and the novel has suddenly become much more interesting. Excited for The Remains of the Day.
