It didn't for me.

Glad to hear you like the 15.. Now you need to find the VW Rye!

This is good to hear, as the 20 was there too. You have the prices about right, as to what was available to me. I'll grab the 20 in a few weeks and ignore the 23, based on your recommendations. A penny saved!

I've got the owner searching for another bottle of the Cragganmore Distillery and will ask him to get me the VW Rye in the fall.

Binge and I tried this at the last SF meetup: Eagle's Rare. Very good.

The Pappy Van Winkle rye is very good, although I am not much of a rye drinker though (only other ryes I have tried are Michter's, Russel's Reserve, and Jim Beam), but I do no what I like in taste.

The Eage Rare 10 year old is terrific, but in this case, age really makes a massive difference because to my palate, the 17 year old bottling is almost like it's from a different distillery. If you can find it, jump all over it.

Having a Pappy Van Winkle 20 year tonight, with a wonderful Cabaguan torpedo. Drinking with a capful of Voss and 5 or 6 ice cubes. This is a fantastic bourbon. Spoils one for anything else.

I think I'm going to get the 20 year soon. That's for setting me straight on the x2 cost for the 23.

Just finished reading this thread (and others on bourbon), twice.

Started off with bourbon recently - had a dinner party with a couple of ladies (a mother & daughter). Opened my first with a bottle of Booker's. The mother's eyes lit up and soon the bottle was 3/4 gone. Said it was the best she's had.

Thanks to the discussion by gnatty8 & Piobaire - my 2nd foray into bourbon will be a bottle of the Pappy Van Winkle's 20 yr ($120...sound about right?). My mouth was watering with your tete-a-tete.

Given my recent experience with guests, I'm reluctant to share. It was really remarkable to see the mother's delight - I'd pour her some just to see her reaction. But what is proper decorum in this context - sharing without draining the bar?

Don't serve or offer what you don't want a guest to drink. You'll love the PVW.

So I got my hands on a bottle of Old Grand Dad 114.. as in 114 proof.

You know what? For a cheapie its actually pretty damn good.

edit: it has that very nutty taste on the back of your throat. yummy.

Alright. So I've kind of browsed through a lot of this thread. A know wine and not so much about bourbon. I want to build up my bourbon palate and am about to go to the store. What's a good bourbon to start with to learn what a real bourbon should taste like? I'm thinking Maker's but I dunno. Maybe Woodford Reserve?
