with the extra20 sale and final sale going on now can I do this?

Buy $70 worth of final sale items I want. And 80$ in filler regular price items to get the free shipping. Return filler items at local Jcrew.
Or would the regular price items be non-returnable as well?

I can't believe that someone would actually buy 'filler' (first time I've heard of this) items.

yea, would be getting 1 "filler" item. If I really like it I may keep it, but probably not.

Still not sure if buying final sale items make your entire order final sale...

-their shipping kills the deal otherwise, $10 on an $70 purchase, that basically cancels the 20% off.

Nope. I know what "filler/fluff" means, but never in reference to buying things that one knows will be returned ahead of time. Living under a rock? I guess...

edit: I looked at that site. Nothing unsual to me with that: buying something you may not want but doing it anyways because it tips the price up for free shipping. I do that. But I think those filler items are meant to be kept. And they're not like 55% of the total order - not exactly the definiton of "filler".

J Crew shipping just turns me off to ever ordering anything online unless it's super cheap on final sale or something. I know $10 for a $70 order isn't that bad, but couple it with sales tax and being so used to free shipping with just about everywhere else I shop online, it sucks.

You need to get your order up to $150 and use a free shipping code like IDJ-899.

Student discount seems to be for only non-sale items everywhere now... I just spoke with someone about it and a separate person also only applied it to my full priced items.

[The student] discount is applicable to all regularly priced and promotionally
priced merchandise selected for purchase at our J.Crew retail stores, at
jcrew.com, or via a phone call. Any merchandise that is reduced to a
price ending in 99 cents will not qualify for the additional 15% price
reduction.
Works on some "sale" items..
