Some new irons ones have a teflon type base that doesn't require you use a press cloth. You can still get some shine and burn the cloth if the temperature is too high. But I use this type iron directly on cloth sometimes. Depends on the cloth and what I am doing. I wouldn't press a new garment that way. His method is ironing, not pressing.
