Hi,

I'm a young 20-something starting med school in a week, and I'm looking for wardrobe ideas that suggest a youthful elegance/sophistication but with a bold yet un-pretentious edge.

I was never really into fashion, but I recently spent a year spending away some of my hard-earned money. I attended one of my school's pre-start events and was complimented often on my extremely well-coordinated outfit. All of a sudden, I feel like I need to be "the trendsetter" all the time or something lol. I'm not complaining though; such a frivolous concern indicates my triumph in getting over other more serious issues. I've never been "the well dressed guy," since I grew up without extra money for new clothes, so I actually think it's cool that I kinda am now.

Anyway, I've been searching around online for pictures of various outfits with little success. I don't want to do any of the cliches, like the gray Ralph Lauren sweater over a white collared shirt or the khaki and polo shirt combo...and certainly nothing as pretentious as a bow-tie a la Tucker Carlson.

My goal is to take these well worn ideas and add some edge to them, if not create an altogether original look myself.

Ideas; suggestions?

Thanks

If you want to develop your personal style, just hang around and follow WAYWN threads in Men's Clothing and/or Streetwear, whichever fits your style the most. Wear whatever you want (I guess). This is for you personal wardrobe.

For your "work" or clinical wardrobe (should be a few years down road), I would suggest that this is not the time or place to be a trendsetter or fashion guru, for a couple reasons. First, I'm on my first rotation, but grades are awarded subjectively by your superiors and thus a rotation is kind of like a 4 or 6 week long job interview. You want to be conservative. Second, I haven't had any experience with this yet, but I imagine you don't want to get your expensive clothes "dirty" with all the various things that can dirty them in medicine. Nuff said. This should be a few years from now, so focus on the first paragraph initially.

Once you get splattered by bodily fluids and have your shoes splashed in the same fluids you'll rethink your on-call attire.

I second the suggestion to check out the WAYWRN thread, it will give you a great insight into how to develop your own personal style.

You will be sitting in a classroom for most of your first 2 years. Just dress casually. Don't over do it.

The first two years you'll be splattered with formaldehyde. The second two years you'll be splattered with blood. Dress accordingly.
