Gillette 40s era Superspeed or Merkur Futur, depending on my mood. Shavemac Finest, Silvertip or Pure grade handmade brush (I have all 3), and currently Derby brand shaving cream (It's rather blah).

For aftershave I use Aqua Velva or Skinbracer. Alcohol splashes for the win!

I can answer this. Simple. 2 drops of olive oil. Superior performance than any brand of shaving oil out there, and as a bonus it's great for your skin. Give it a shot, you'd be surprised.

Wow, thanks for the tip javyn. Just did my first shave using olive oil and my skin now feels smooth as silk!

If you don't have a whole lot of facial hair, is buying one of these classic safety razors justified?

Art of Shaving Sandalwood Pre-Shave Oil
Trumper's Coconut Oil cream
Col. Conk Styptic Pen
Alum Block
Mach 3

A little overzealous saw some redness and slight irritation on my neck afterward. At least I can still smell the coconut every now and then!

Depends. Probably not as far as shaving goes, but for a luxurious experience feeling warm badger hair lathering on your face, and feeling the DE glide over your skin...oh hell, yeah it's worth it IMO lol. The best part to me is splashing a highly mentholated alcohol based aftershave on my face like Aqua Velva or Skinbracer...brrr

Ok, well I just shelled out 80 on a Merkur HD, feather blades, stand and styptic stick. I'm going to buy the badger hair brush from crabtree.

Take your time with your first few shaves. There is a learning curve involved with getting the technique right with a DE and Feathers are wonderful but very unforgiving. Make sure you prep your face sensibly to lessen the redness too.
