One week left in Japan, with a little spending money left over from an internship here. Don't really have a bag other than timbuk2 messenger packs, and itching for something a little classier (but not too flambouyant, since I'm headed back to down-to-earth portland). Suggestions? Porter?

I'll post a pic of my margiela bag if I get around to it.

It's made in China, as are the rest of Barbour's bags.

What size is it, and what type of leather?

Here are the swatches they sent me. Mine is nominally espresso brown, but I think is somewhere in between the chestnut and espresso swatches they sent. They do a lot of hand rubbing and such to the leather, so I doubt each one comes out looking the same. Also I have no idea how old the swatches are and whether they've changed.

Size is largest carry-on size.

That is a beautiful bag - do they offer the option of having no logos though?

Isaac Reina has been making some nice looking bags for a few seasons now:

I have not seen one in person though (quite limited distribution over in the US).

Rach- I can't believe I just read through this entire thread. This is really good stuff and I enjoy your comments. Good work.

One of the bags you haven't yet mentioned and is a personal favorite of mine is Brady bags. They are handmade in the UK since the 1880's. The current owner bought the company from the Brady grand children and he is a maker of fine leather polo saddles and ridding accessories. All made in the Midlands by hand by fine leather and fabric craftsmen. The bags are for hunting & fishing. But a few have been recently designed for town & country. Here are mine. The fishing bag is from 1986. I bought it as a dipper bag when my son was born. The rubber liner was ideal for formula, wipes and spare diapers.

The square bag was made for the Dover Street Market. I used it to carry artwork.

The fabric on both is a tight, twill. Much finer than canvas, The leather is a true bridle leather. I know a lot of you guys rave about Filson, but if you want a step up in refinement but with a true outdoor pedigree, then check out Brady.

Thereabouts, yes. Also I'm sure they could leave the logo, off. Everything is MTO. I was going to do a custom logo, which I believe is $100 extra, but they needed a .eps file from photoshop, which I couldn't seem to muster in time.
