one day in Melbourne

title says it all - one day in Melbourne, what do I do?

thinking of either:

seeing the peguins
snorkling
going on a visit to a park outside of town to see wildlife
victoria market
chinatown


one or a combination of the above. what do you recomend?

The penguins are only on Philip Island (about 1.5 hours drive from Melbourne) and only come onshore at dusk. I haven’t been down there for years, so not sure what else there is to do once you get there.

If your interested in wildlife you could check out Hillsville Sanctuary (about an hour’s drive out of town).

Queen vic market is ok, but keep in mind that it's closed on Mondays and Wednesday.

I just watched this weeks No Reservations, which happened to be mostly in Melbourne.

wander around the city and the botanic gardens. Check with some of the other boys for food recs. Hang out with Nick M and appolyon down in St Kilda somewhere....

Go to the races? Botanical gardens area is nice. Some good restaurants/cafes, and a nice bookstore.

Depends on the date, transport arrangements, full or partial day to spare.

Not many tourist attractions in Melbourne itself, and it's a bit hard to get out and see much in one day. Assuming the worst - that you'll be there on a week day and using public transport - I'd say just walk around the city, drink coffee and eat in the laneways, but then again that's my idea of travel.

coming in on sunday about 8 am. meetings all day monday and then leaving. so I have sunday. won't be renting a car.

I saw Anthouny Bourdain this week, too - I will probrably hit the schezuan place that he talked about there.

I really would like to get to philips island to see the penguins, and to victoria market. we'll see what I can fit in.

Was it "Dainty Sichuan"? Good call.


I would recommend getting a chauffeur car for the day / afternoon. They are not terribly expensive ($AU65/ hour - cheaper if you take a whole day), and it would mean you could easily get to the market and to Phillip Island. PM me if you would like details of the firm I use.

Good luck getting to Phillip Island. Not too much on this Sunday off the top of my head.

There is the Melbourne International Film Festival, but I don't think you want to see a movie as part of your 1 day here.
Richmond & Essendon are playing at the MCG, if you wanted to see a game of Aussie Rules Football. First bounce at 2:10, and would finish at approx 4:50.

Regarding food/drink, it depends on what you are after but I wouldn't put any Schezuan place on the top of my list. But dinner is hard on a Sunday night when you don't have a booking.

As above I would recomment St Ali (12-18 Yarra Place, South Melbourne) for breakfast & coffee. Other options are Dench bakery (109 Scotchmer St, Fitzroy North), Richmond Hill Cafe & Larder (48-50 Bridge Rd, Richmond) and Mr Tulk (State Library, 328 Swanston St, Melbourne conservative business dress). Just depends on where you are in and around the city.

Lunch? Take your pick from the resturants at Crown Casino.

If you have some spare time in the afternoon, check out Brunetti in the conservative business dress for a cake & coffee/hot chocolate if you have a sweet tooth. Maybe Koko Black (conservative business dress) or Ganache (South Yarra) if you really like chocolate.

Dinner being the hard part. I'd say head down to St Kilda, have a wander around the beach at sunset and find a cafe/restaurant around there to try out.

There are penguins in St. Kilda. Not exactly sure which break water. So you could see St. Kilda and have the possibility of seeing some penguins.
