I'm just getting in to photography; had some nice seats for the Phils-Dodgers game the other day and brought the camera along.

These were taken with a Canon 20D w/ 17-85mm f4-5.6. I took a ton of pics, and the vast majority were nowhere near as sharp as I'd like. Actually, none of them were really as sharp as I'd have liked.

I started out shooting with the shutter set at 1/640 to try to freeze the action, but it was somewhat cloudy and many of the early pictures came out dark (this effectively locked the camera into max aperture.) Later on I switched to max aperture and left the timing alone. I took a bunch of pics of the batters and none really came out well - I think I was having trouble focusing on the player with so much going on in the stands in the background.

I assume the blurriness was due to several factors - the lens being at max aperture, not getting enough light early on, and the subjects being out of focus.

I've got the same seats for a game in September and would like to do better next time. I'd like much better sharpness and less depth of field. I think the answer is to get something like a 200mm 2.8 lens, but I'm wondering what I could have done better from a technique perspective. Tripod is out; maybe a monopod but I'm not sure how much that'd help with very fast shutter speeds.

I can post more of the shots if necessary.

rent/buy some faster glass, i'd recommend the 70-200 f/2.8 as it is a very versatile lens. don't need IS for sports. you don't need a monopod either until you are shooting either very slow shutter speeds (can assist with panning for motorsports or the like) or are using an extremely heavy lens.

Nice pics, but a bit to heavily photoshopped probably.
