I am convinced The Road functions as some kind of rorschach test on the reader, whether they find the story depressing or affirming. That or those who call the book depressing don't understand it at all.

I didn't know a movie version was coming out at the end of this year...

I'm reading the latest issue of Men's Ex. Well, actually, I'm not "reading" it because I don't read Japanese. But I am fluent with pictures.

yea, that must be the latter - I'm obviously an idiot. Good review, thank you - concise and to the point

I haven't - were these pre-requisites?

To be clear, depressing doesn't mean it's not a good piece of art. There are several highly depressing movies that I like (e.g. most of Lars von Trier's filmography). I'm still on the fence about The Road - it is a good book, highly depressing IMO, but clearly leaves its mark on the reader. Is it "great"? I don't know.

Don't forget Notes From Underground, and often overlooked classic. And make sure you get the best translations (Volokhonsky for Dostoevsky and Tolstoy).

I've already read Notes From Underground, and the Pevear and Volokhonsky translations are the only ones I've purchased.

Avoiding the horrible translations by Constance Garret or any Brit trying to translate any foreign work into English means you are one step ahead of the game!

Been reading through Kafka's works a lot lately. Loved The Metamorphosis but I could barely trudge through The Trial.

Kafka's a real happy guy. Sunshine and rainbows.

Just read "The stranger" by Camus. What a pitty it's so short, only lasted me a nice evening at a bar.
