Read Michael Crichton's "Next". Excellent book on modern day issues, with a writing style I love. R.I.P.

Read "Smith of Wootton Major" and "Farmer Giles of Ham" by J.R.R. Tolkien. Used to be a Tolkien fan, but couldn't make it all the way through the Lord of the Rings or the Silmarillion. Great short stories, maybe I'll give him another shot.

Read "Hey Rube" by Hunter S. Thompson. Didn't really like it. Don't like sports, either, so maybe that's it. He's extremely interesting, but I just didn't like this book. Funny thing is, this probably the most 'real', personal book by him. What's that say? I dunno. (See the movie 'Gonzo')

Read "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" by Hunter S. Thompson. Excellent. No other commentary necessary.

Currently about 2/3's of the way through 'Alas, Babylon', by Pat Frank. Excellent so far. Let's see if the Titor comparison is real.

I've started Our Posthuman Future. So far, I like the rigor and emotional distance characteristic of actual philosophers that Fukuyama has and Kurzweil lacks. It's an easy read, too, the kind that is not due to overly simplistic thought but rather clarity of thought and the ability to present the matter simply. As an editor, I really value that skill. Whereas Kurzweil seems to cover up inadequacies in his argument with stilted language, Fukuyama has the confidence in his to speak directly. As to whether I'll end up agreeing with his position will be determined later, but regardless, this will be an enjoyable and thought-provoking read.

I'm also reading The Basic Writings of Bertrand Russell. It's an authorized anthology of his many works. What a brilliant man. I can only dream of being so well-rounded and intellectually capable. Unfortunately, the collection lacks "On Denoting," so I'll have to pick that up separately after I'm done, but overall it seems like a good collection.

I guess I have to hand it to Kurzweil. I hadn't realized just how important substance and rigor is to me for me until quitting 100 pages into his book.

Swann's Way as an interlude between either The Count of Monte Cristo or The Death of Ivan Ilyich.
