Expensive ties- how can people tell?

I want to buy an expensive tie THAT SHOWS to some degree how expensive it was... but all the pricey ties I've seen at the mall- Armani, Gucci, etc, look equivalent to the $50 JCPenny ties. I occasionally see ties that look very intricately woven with high sheen and loud color patterns that I know must have been expensive... but I just can't find any. Are they the kind of item I'd have to find in some remote Italian boutique or something? I want to spend about $150, anyone have any recommendations?

People in the know tend to recognize an Hermes pattern. Charvey is also iconic, if a bit less so.

Leave the price tag on, if you're that set on showing people how expensive it was.

i don't want anything with a brand-name pattern or logo or anything, just a really intricate looking tie that looks a cut above your average tie.

No "regular" person is going to be able to tell. Even the people here will not infallibly be able to tell a $150 tie from a $50 simply by observing it on the wearer.

Whats more important, why do you want to show that it was expensive? People who appreciate nice clothing will see it by the rest of your outfit, and the general public only is impressed by some "fancy" brandname.

Suggest you take $40-50 of that $150 and pick up a tie through B&S here (because many were probably upwards of $150 MSRP to begin with).

And invest the remainder in a better tailor.

so basically around $50 is the maximum limit for the apparent expensiveness of ties? in other words, anything more expensive than $50 will never appear as such?

Good quality expensive ties look expensive close-up, but only to those who know something about clothes. It's the weight of the silk, the quality of the weave (e.g. if it has no black background) or of the print, the way they hold the knot, etc. But most people wouldn't be able to tell the difference. Some Hermes, Gucci and Ferragamo patterns are quite recognisable as such by more people, but not by most. If you don' want logos beware of those Hermes ties with the 'H' disguised as a geometric or equestrian pattern.

Manton means you basicly cant tell just by looking at it (without taking a closer look to see the weaving, feel the fabric etc etc).

It depends on who your audience is. 2% of the people you come in contact with -- less -- will know or care anything about clothes. If you want to dress for those 2%, there is still no guarantee that even a majority of them will know at a glance that you are wearing an expensive tie.

The other 98% is certain not to notice or care.

I just wear it backwards. They can see the label easier this way. Problem is some see the lack of lining and get confused
