dont come with any tamper seal

dont come with any breakable seal to show that it wasnt sampled. you pop open a bottle of shampoo and you see the spout is surrounded with shampoo residue, then you know it had been squeezed on one occasion or another.
who knows some malicious kid, spits into it and shakes it up.

that is why i reach for the back for these types of items.

everything else, i dont mind taking the first.

Wow. I do this quite a bit as well. Multiple times before I leave the office, no less. Before I leave the house, or lock the car.

One time many years ago I met up with my then-gf in a parking lot and we took her car to the movies. About an hour into the movie I felt around for my keys - nowhere to be found. I borrowed her car and raced back to the bank parking lot and there they were - in the ignition.

I had no trouble retrieving them, since I had taken the doors off the Jeep earlier in the day.

I do the man-pat pretty often. Stand up, and slightly tap each from hip pocket and back pocket.

Keys.Cellphone.Wallet. Check.Check.Check.

If the FBI were observing me they would find it a quite strange ritual

personally, I am petrified of birds. No idea why. It has, over the years, been the source of considerable amusement to my friends.

I wouldn't call it a phobia or OCD, but I too check my pockets quite a bit to make sure my wallet, phone and keys are available.

I dated a girl that lost everything all the time. I have no idea how many phones she went through, and she would get spare car and house keys in groups of 5 usually. She lost her driver's license for months one time. At various times I'd be cleaning my apartment and find something of hers randomly tucked in strange places. I could understand a car key in the cushions of my couch, but seriously, I found one of her frequent shopper cards under my computer keyboard once. How the hell did it get there?

So, after spending time with someone like that, I got worried about losing my stuff all the time. Thus, keys, phone and wallet always go in the same pockets and I can do the quick pat and determine if they are all still there or not.

styrofoam. I won't touch the stuff. Don't know why I hate it so much.

and birds. i hate birds. I tried to get over it once by getting a couple of pet parakeets. I ended up covering their cage with a shirt and then I gave them away so they wouldn't die.

Guilty.

And guilty. I've been on vacation for the past week and I have checked for my passport 15-20 times a day. Also, while on vacation (and especially if in a foreign country) I have an irrational fear of being pickpocketed.

Interesting that several of you express a phobia about birds. I've known a few fellows and more women who have that. Women seem to have a great horror of birds' getting tangled in their hair. They make rather treacherous pets. My African grey will still nail me from time to time, but at other times he can be quite affectionate. I've had him 23 1/2 years.

It must be really rough for people who are phobic about dogs and cats. I had a friend at Oxford who was phobic about both. I was walking my Tosa Dempsey past a bus stop one day and one old woman started jumping up and down and flailing her arms, exclaiming, "I'm afraid of dogs! I'm afraid of dogs!" D. walked past her disdainfully. I don't think she was playing with a full deck generally. I have a certain amount of sympathy for such people. I get an uneasy feeling when I see some show-off going about in public places with a boa constrictor, python or anaconda draped around him, as I have from time to time.

Aristotle mentioned that in his day some people were pathologically afraid of ferrets and weasels. I believe they were more popular as pets in ancient Greece and Rome than today but were largely displaced by cats starting around the beginning of the Common/Christian Era.

One animal that has a benign, popular image that gives me the creeps is the elephant. If they weren't such a familiar animal, we would certainly perceive them as grotesque and monstrous. They are very flighty and capricious, and they can kill you in so many different ways. It is interesting that in most zoos, only keepers that volunteer for the duty are assigned to the elephants. The snakes are the only other group of animals where this is operative. I was once given a private tour of Tippi Hedren's Shambala animal preserve. They had an African elephant there. My companions, Mike and Yvonne Venturino (whose names may be familiar to some of you), went ahead and fed the elephant treats and petted it. I happened to know that that that damn elephant had on one occasion crushed Tippi's leg, so I stood back. Jack Lott told me he thought I was prudent to have done so.
