Who is wearing suspenders (Braces) out there? I have a few pair I wear once in awhile (mostly in winter). Why? Because it has a cool vintage effect, that's why. A relatively inexpensive addition to any wardrobe that can add very dramatic effects! There has to be others who like to wear suspenders out there. I would like to know if there are any rules to wearing them or matching ties etc. I have 2 Clip-on models, and 2 leather hoop models. Please share your suspender sartorialisms

Again, I call upon the masters here for input. (please...no flippent remarks on this thread....let's all learn something from the experts)

I wear suspenders/braces, mostly in autumn/winter, but also sometimes in summer/spring.

I'm sure there are rules, but I don't care (other than no clip on, and no braces/belt combo)

Wearing suspenders is a very personal thing.

I really like Thurston braces.

So, if you wear them with a suit do you keep the jacket on? I'm not sure I like the look of braces on their own.

Mostly, yeah. Or wear a vest if I think I might have the jacket off a lot. Had a suit on yesterday and wore the jacket most of the day. I did take the jacket off in my office for a while.

Suspenders primarily for 3pc suits and odd-vest wearing (either with suit or odd jacket).

I may get around to wearing them without vest, but haven't as yet.

+1 That's the type of info I am looking for. Thanks Mark. I know hardly anyone wears suspenders anymore. Most men that would have one time worn them, are now probably in their 70's or 80's At this point in mens fashion, it has become more theatrical-wear. Some days I like to do something odd, just for fun. I'll stick to the Suit = braces / Odd trousers = belt rule. Thanks everyone.

I have one very nice pair for formal wear. Other than that I tried wearing braces in the 80's (Gordon Gecko made me do it) but never found them to be comfortable. I didn't like the feel on my shoulders.

It's not a rule. It's just what I do.

Well, yes, but those are fairly arbitrary grounds for a 'rule'. I hate belts, both wearing them and how they look. I do my best to avoid them. Some of my trousers fit exactly right and don't need anything to keep them up; others don't and since braces, to me, are by far the most comfortable way of holding them in place, I use braces. As far as colour/pattern, I suppose technically you're not meant to see them (and you don't if you wear a waistcoat in which case the colour doesn't matter one bit) but even if you don't take off your jacket (I agree, braces worn just with a shirt does not look good) people are going to catch glimpses of your get-up. My approach is similar to how you'd select a pocket square, ie to complement the overall palette without the need to match any specific colour or pattern as long as the items look good together.

Not quite theatrical but they are curious to people. I only like the light silk ones from trafalgar's limited edition range, heavier weight braces have too many attendant negatives. As it is, I would imagine most men wearing braces are going to stand out a bit like a fedora or bow tie wearer.

I used to wear suspenders with everything but casual pants and most odd trousers. Then I stopped getting brace tops for summer suits. Then for all 2-piece SB suits. Now I only get them with 3-piece suits.

Suspenders definitely do their job better than belts, but I don't like to travel with them, and after years of not caring what impression they might (or might not) leave in the minds of others, I now worry about that a little. I also like that I can see my shirts now.
